How Do You Turn Your Expertise Into Results?

Structure What You Know and Choose How You’ll Deliver It

If you’re an experienced professional, you probably have decades of knowledge, experience, skills, judgment, processes, techniques, tools, best practices, and stories stored in your head.

That expertise is valuable.

But here’s an important question:

Have you organized what you know into a repeatable process for helping someone achieve a result?

For coaches, consultants, advisors, trainers, authors, speakers, and other experienced professionals, answering that question can become the foundation for your entire online business.

Experts Create and Deliver Content

Think about what experts actually do.

We write. We speak. We train. We coach. We advise.

Even if you primarily think of yourself as a consultant or coach, you probably do several of these things.

You may write articles or social media posts to explain your ideas. You may speak to groups or appear on podcasts. You may teach concepts to prepare clients to work with you. And then you may use coaching, consulting, or advising to help clients apply those concepts to their specific circumstances.

In each case, you are using your expertise and experience to create and deliver content that educates, inspires, and supports a community of people in overcoming challenges and achieving aspirations.

The question then becomes: How do you organize all that expertise so you can use it effectively?

Create Your Signature Transformation Framework

One of the most valuable things you can do as an expert is organize what you know into what I call a Signature Transformation Framework.

Think about your client at Point A.

Where are they now?

Then think about Point B.

Where do they aspire to be?

Your framework describes the major steps you use to help someone move from A to B.

For example, my overall transformation is helping an experienced professional move from wanting to turn their expertise into an online business to operating a successful online business.

My framework organizes that journey into a series of steps involving defining, designing, building, operating, and improving the business.

Your framework might have three steps, five steps, seven steps, or more. The exact number isn’t important.

What matters is that you take the expertise that has accumulated in your head over many years and organize it into a process you can explain, teach, and repeat.

Your Signature Transformation Framework becomes the root intellectual property of your expert business.

You Don't Have to Deliver the Whole Framework at Once

Once you have created your framework, you don't have to take every client through the entire thing every time.

Instead, you can splinter pieces of your framework into smaller transformations.

Suppose your complete framework has five major steps. One client might need help with the entire transformation. Another might only need help with Step 2. A third might need a small piece of Step 4.

Those individual pieces can become the basis for your content, lead generators, workshops, courses, coaching programs, consulting engagements, and other offers.

Even a social media post can be a tiny splinter of your framework.

A blog article can explore a larger piece. A lead magnet can help someone solve one specific problem. A workshop can take someone through one meaningful part of the transformation. A course or coaching program can address a larger portion.

You aren't constantly inventing unrelated things to talk about or sell.

You're drawing from the same underlying intellectual property.

Then Choose How You Want to Deliver It

There is another important choice to make.

What you deliver and how you deliver it are two different decisions.

You can deliver essentially the same expertise through many different formats:

  • Writing: books, eBooks, articles, newsletters, blogs, and social media

  • Speaking: keynotes, podcasts, videos, and presentations

  • Training: workshops, webinars, live classes, and online courses

  • Coaching: private coaching, group coaching, masterminds, and subscriptions

  • Advising: consulting, mentoring, professional services, reports, or implementation services

There isn't one right answer.

Choose delivery formats that are effective for your clients and that fit how you prefer to work.

If you love facilitating groups, group coaching or workshops may be natural choices. If you enjoy writing, books, newsletters, and articles may play a larger role. If you enjoy working deeply with individual clients, consulting or private coaching may be central to your business.

It's your business. You get to choose.

Your Framework Can Support the Entire Customer Journey

This combination of framework splinter + delivery format becomes especially powerful when you use it to design your customer journey.

Someone who has never heard of you isn't ready for the same experience as someone who has been following you for six months.

At the beginning of the journey, you might introduce small pieces of your framework through social media posts, articles, podcasts, or videos.

When someone shows more interest, you can provide a larger splinter through a lead magnet, free training, or live event.

As the relationship develops, you might offer a workshop, course, subscription, community, or group coaching program.

Eventually, some clients may want a larger transformation through higher-level coaching, consulting, or professional services.

The underlying expertise doesn't have to change.

What changes is the portion of the transformation you are helping them achieve and the way you package and deliver it.

One Framework Can Become Many Offers

This also gives you a much more systematic way to think about your offers.

Instead of asking:

“What should I sell?”

Start with two simpler questions:

What part of my transformation framework will help this client achieve a meaningful result?

And:

What is the best way to deliver that transformation?

That combination becomes the root of an offer:

Framework Splinter + Delivery Format = A Specific Transformation Experience

From one well-designed Signature Transformation Framework, you can create a progression of free and purchased experiences that naturally lead people through your customer journey.

That's much simpler than continually trying to invent the next product, program, or piece of content.

Start by Organizing What You Already Know

You probably don't need more expertise.

You already have years, perhaps decades, of knowledge and experience.

The opportunity is to organize it.

Create a repeatable framework for producing results. Splinter that framework into smaller transformations. Choose delivery formats that work for your clients and that you enjoy delivering. Then arrange those experiences into a logical customer journey.

Your expertise is already in your head.

Your Signature Transformation Framework turns that expertise into intellectual property you can use to systematically create content, offers, and results for your clients.
